Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club enjoyed a highly successful County Championships this year, with records tumbling and fantastic results across age categories. Forty seven swimmers from the club took part, notching up an impressive 157 top-8 finishes and 221 personal best times across three weekends of swimming.
Ellie Mitchell (14) and Cira Fletcher (16) both broke Championship records: Ellie’s golds in 50m backstroke (30.40), 100m backstroke (1:05.00) and 200m backstroke (2:20.09); and Cira’s gold in 50m breaststroke (34.79). Ellie was also her age group BAGCAT champion for the third year running. Ellie took an amazing 22 medals in total, with Amy Young on an equally impressive 20.
But with a total of 42 gold, 40 silver and 34 bronze medals, the club’s swimmers achieved outstanding results across ages, strokes and distances. “We had a very successful year in terms of medals,” commented head coach, John Sargent. “I’m also particularly delighted to see some of our younger swimmers reaching the podium: Thomas Ogden had an outstanding championships, picking up three golds; Isabella Renwick took two silvers and a bronze. Both 11-year-olds, this is great news for the future of the club. We also had five 10-year-olds taking part, all of whom achieved personal best times, and six swimmers there for the first time.”
“We are very proud of our more experienced swimmers, who picked up an impressive medal tally, many of whom have also qualified for the Regional Championships in May. They set a fantastic example to those coming through, and undoubtedly inspire them in training and competition. This shows in our results; from Chloe Odgen’s haul of three golds, two silvers and two bronzes, to Niamh James’ first medal at Counties in an exceptional swim in 200m backstroke. We also have Jake Lloyd, who coaches some of our younger squads, leading by example in taking two golds, a silver and a bronze.”

In BAGCATs, several swimmers also earned places in the top 8: Nicholas Botha, Mia Carter, Daniel Chada, Callum Davis, Nellie Eastland, Chloe Ogden, Jessica Penkul, Josie-Pretious White and Isabella Renwick.
BSSC swimmers also competing at counties were: Charlotte Anderson, Isabelle Baker, Harvey Bannister, Cameron Brickel, Martha Broderick, Alex Catton, Hannah Connolly, Millie Fields, Anya Fletcher, James Gisborne, Callum Harold, Nathan Holmes, Thomas Howes, Emily Lampon, Eleanor Mason, Grace Massingham-Lamprell, Chloe Nash, Kaitlin Owen, Jessica Penkul, Megan Pointer, Steven Raphy and Joe Taylor.
