On Saturday 22 September, three Stortford Masters swimmers (Karen Roddam, Emma Davies and Helen Shingler) braved the cold water to compete in the third Swim Serpentine event in London’s Hyde Park, which was the venue for the open water competition at the London 2012 Olympics. A record 6000 swimmers of all ages and abilities took part in this open water swimming event that included distances of half-mile, one-mile, two-mile and ‘Super six’ (a total swim across the day of six-miles!).
All three Masters performed brilliantly. Emma come 41st in her age group (45-54) in the one-lap, one-mile, event in 00:34.10 and Karen (photo left) 34th in her age group (35-44) for the 2 miles in 01:02.34. Helen (photo right) joined 59 other swimmers competing in the Super Six and was the first female home in an amazing time of 2:52.48. Not only did Helen cope with the freezing water and navigating round the incredible floating sculpture (London Mastaba by Christo) six whole times, she beat the second place female by over 30 minutes! Huge congratulations to them all!
